“Remember what makes one human,
animal, is not the high road
but the baseness in the heart,
the knowledge that they could,
at any moment, betray you.”
Still on the beach. But probably for not too much longer as there are a ton of things staffing. This is both a good and bad thing as I love the free time, but am bored out of my mind.
Since being unstaffed have done a lot of:
- staring into space
- watching hulu
- shop (for clothing and home decorative objects, oh how I feel a domestic)
- have 4 hour conversations about feminism and gender schemas (awesome for me, not so much for the guy involved)
- obsessively check my email for staffing updates
- break lamps by slamming computer my computer into it - alas IKEA 10 dollar lamps are not of the highest quality glass. Hopefully the crazy glue is enough to keep the thing together. Macbook on the otherhand is totally unscathed
- attempt to lift weights at the gym and thoroughly embarrass myself, as a result my arms are now horribly sore :(
- pay bills: my most despised thing about the real world
Today perhaps I will paint something…

“Overall, I think it’s a good time to have a girl in the 21st century because things are changing, with more opportunities for women. But girls are still the underdog, which means they’ll work harder, and everybody loves an underdog. The next Steve Jobs will totally be a chick, because girls are No. 2—and No. 2 always wins in America. Apple was a No. 2 company for years, and Apple embodies a lot of what have been defined as feminine traits: an emphasis on intuitive design, intellect, a strong sense of creativity, and that striving to always make the greatest version of something. Traditionally, men are more like Microsoft, where they’ll just make a fake version of what that chick made, then beat the shit out of her and try to intimidate everybody into using their product.”
the real world, part 1
Returned from training a few Sundays ago with new friends from all over the world - from South America to Italy scattered people and places I hope to visit someday soon.
Then plunged Monday into actual work, with my newly acquired toolkit of various hazily recalled analytic methods in tow. It has all been very interesting thus far. That first Monday afternoon I was assigned a proposal to work on. True to this job’s data-driven reputation, I’ve since done a lot of poking around various medtech companies digging for endless quantities of data, a process much more time consuming and stressful than first anticipated. There is always a deadline, always more text-boxes to align, font sizes to change, and axes to label. Success or failure, it seems at this point defined by how many iterations of changes to my work that are requested by my supervisor - how many times it takes to finally get something exactly right.
After that wrapped up last Tuesday, I’ve since been “on the beach,” which has consisted of a lot of gym-going, Newbury street wandering (aka wallet emptying), and Hulu-watching, with work related social events interspersed. Over the weekend even got a chance to take a great little trip up to this resort in Vermont - more gym going and wallet emptying, tis the holiday season afterall, paired with some nice and leisurely hiking around Mt. Equinox.
Wednesday I head home for Thanksgiving! First time not as a student home on break. Usually by this time of year I’m stressed to my gills with midterms and dying for a good mom-cooked meal, but now that I have a kitchen of my own I eat as I like and work has honestly not been stressful at all…Still will be nice to head back to suburbia for my favorite holiday of all time :D Lots to be thankful for!

Def believe more women are needed and we should encourage them in business, from start-ups to Fortune 100’s. Studies have shown that women are more practical with money and running businesses, and tend to have a lower default rate on loans (particularly microfinance in developing countries, the theme for today).
Here’s an interesting article that was recently published in Forbes highlighting efforts and some stats to get more women involved in start-ups, particularly tech accelerators.
